Antique Sewing Box with Thread Holder Compartment, 6 inches high, 6 ¾ inches wide, unmarked, probably mid to late 1800’s, probably American, lid to thread compartment has damaged corners, front panel of thread compartment has an old repaired crack to the wood, drawer front has veneer front with a tiny chip to the lower left corner, old repaired crack to drawer bottom at back right corner, minor soiling and stains to interiors, made of mixed woods including walnut, the thread compartment has metal spool holders inside, found with 3 tiny spools of thread and 3 carved wood wheels that probably help the thread unwind, the front and sides of the compartment have holes for the thread that have bone (bovine) eyelets, the lid has holes in the corners that fit over the wood finials, there are matching decorative finials on the base, the drawer has a wood knob and fitted sides, found contents of the drawer include a broken steel scissors, needles on a square of cloth, a piece of wood veneer, and a torn piece from a newspaper that includes obituaries from 1883 which helps to date the sewing box, there is also a “To whom it may concern” about a woman who left her husband, a nicely finished piece that is even varnished on the back and the bottom, a small work box that could be easily carried from room to room, lovely.US shipping via Priority Mail.
