    Description

Exceptional  and unusual American antique hand woven sewing basket of unknown origin.  I originally thought this basket could be Native American but I'm thinking it is more in the style of Nantucket Island baskets of the American North East coast.
The basket is round and has a wood lid and base. The hand woven basketry has a horizontal design with a geometric, star-like motif. The woven coils are of three colors of golden brown.  The woven basketry is laid down on what appears to be a thick, cardboard-like material.
The hard wood, which looks like cherry wood, is of a fine grain.
The interior of the basket is lined with tacked on fabric, which is now loose.
The diameter of the basket is 6 1/2". The lid is 6 3/4".   The height to the top of the pin cushion finial is approximately 7 1/2".
The bottom of the lid has a compartment for storing needles and pins, fitted with a hinged,  sliding wood cover.
The condition of this antique basket is very good. There is no damage to the weaving.  There is some light rubbing to the finish on the wood lid, as pictured. Also the interior lining is a little loose and the fabric on the bottom is lightly stained and aged, as pictured.
    Weight:  1 lb. 0.4 oz.
